A concerned group of citizens met to determine the best route to establish an arts center or arts museum. With funds provided in part by the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the group was able to fund a feasibility study. While waiting for this dream to come to fruition, the Lower Alabama Arts Coalition Board of Directors established a site at 513-A East Three Notch Street in Andalusia as the Lower Alabama Arts Center (LAAC).

Established as a 501(c)3, LAAC strives to bring an enlivened arts experience to the residents of Covington County, Alabama. Generously funded by the Solon and Martha Dixon Foundation, local residents and area businesses, LAAC began as a Board of eight members and a dream. Now LAAC has a full-time location offering exhibits, classes in art and music, a children’s summer art camp, an office manager, and a long list of plans for the future.

It was the initial grant from the Solon and Martha Dixon Foundation that allowed LAAC to open the facility at 513-A East Three Notch Street.

“We have already outgrown our current space and are looking for a larger space to accomplish our goals in bringing  better classes, broader exposure to the arts, enriching the lives of area residents and preserving our cultural heritage," commented LAAC President Barbara Tyler.
